The arithmetic
The Guttmacher Institute recorded 1,126,000 clinician-provided abortions in the United States in 2025. Spread evenly across 365 days, that is 3,085 a day — one every 28 seconds. The counter shows that rate multiplied by the share of the year elapsed, and assumes an even rate throughout.
The source
Guttmacher supports legal abortion. Its figures are used here for that reason: the number cannot be dismissed as the arithmetic of opponents. The CDC reports a lower total only because several states, California among them, do not report to it.
Guttmacher also states that its estimate is an undercount. It excludes abortions from advance-provision medication, online pharmacies, community networks and non-clinicians, as well as those performed under exceptions in states with total bans. The real figure is higher.
